Chapter Eighteen

I kept relaxing my hands on the steering wheel to keep my knuckles from going numb. Luca was in the passenger seat tapping on his phone to pull up the notes that he’d taken on Pietro’s day to day activities. As long as we could pin him down sometime, we’d be able to get some info from him about where Angelica was.

Santino sat in the back, but he was leaning forward between the front seats, exhaling hard from time to time when he thought that I wasn’t going fast enough. I tried to ignore him, but I understood the frustration.

I wanted to go faster, too.

I wanted to find Angelica.

I needed to make sure that she was okay.

Honestly, in all my life, I’d never felt this way about a woman before, and even though it was probably stupid because I barely knew her, I couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like to get to know her better.

There was something intoxicating about her, something that I’d never experienced. She was driven and bold, and while I first saw her and wanted to fuck her, I could see myself wanting more.

But that was something to worry about at another time. The intel we had on Pietro was good since it came from Luca himself, but that still meant that we had to intercept him and take him without him putting up too much of a fuss.

And from what I knew about him, he was going to be a real asshole.

“He’ll be walking to the office on this street,” I said, turning my head to the right to try to catch a glimpse of him. Snatching anyone off the street in the middle of the day was bold and reckless, but with our three families working together, nobody was going to call the cops.

Especially because the Monti family was in on it.

The only family who didn’t know that we were coming was the Damico family, but they would figure it out soon enough.

“There.” Luca pointed at an older man, his shoulders hunched against the wind, walking towards us. He carried a briefcase in one hand and a coffee in the other. His coat collar was turned up against the wind and he scowled like he’d just heard bad news.

The asshole didn’t have any idea how bad his day could possibly get.

“I’ll keep the car running,” I said, pulling over to the shoulder. Pietro was about twenty feet away from us and closing in. He obviously wasn’t paying much attention to the fact that we were staring at him.

“We just have to get him in the back,” Santino said, shifting over in the seat so that he was closer to the door. Both he and Luca were poised and ready to jump out as soon as Pietro got closer.

We watched as he slowed down before he got to the car, then put his briefcase on the ground long enough to pull his phone from his pocket. Luca glanced over at me, worry clear on his face, but I shook my head.
